The Role of Student Organization (BEM) in Enhancing Student Engagement and Developing a Global Mindset

Abstract

This study explores the role of the Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa (BEM) in enhancing student engagement and fostering the development of a global mindset among university students. In the current era of globalization, higher education institutions are challenged to produce graduates who are not only academically competent but also equipped with leadership skills, cross-cultural awareness, and collaborative capabilities. Using a qualitative descriptive approach supported by questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, the research analyzed the effectiveness of BEM activities in enhancing student engagement and the extent to which these activities contribute to developing a global mindset. The findings reveal that participation in BEM not only increases student engagement through leadership opportunities and organizational experiences but also broadens students’ perspectives by exposing them to global issues, partnerships, and competencies. Thus, BEM serves as a strategic platform that bridges local student initiatives with global challenges, empowering students to become globally minded leaders who remain rooted in local values. The research concludes that by balancing organizational responsibilities with global awareness, BEM enables students to navigate the complexities of modern society and contribute meaningfully both within their local environment and in the broader global community. These findings highlight the importance of integrating student organization activities into higher education strategies for holistic student development.
