Antibacterial Activity of Beruwas Laut (Scaevola taccada (Gaertn.) ROXB)
Abstract
The present work was carried out to study the antimicrobial activity of the ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Scaevola taccada (Family Goodeniaceae), against Gram (+) bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, Gram (–) Salmonella typhi, E. coli. The antibacterial activities were determined by using Difussion Agar method and Bioautography. The ethanolic extract was found to effective antibacterial. The results were compared with the inhibition caused by commercially available standard reference antibiotic disc (Tetracycline). The inhibitory effects of extracts on the growth of both Gram (+) and Gram (-) organisms are very close and identical in magnitude and comparable with standard antibiotic disc used.
