The use of Questioning Technique to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension at the Ninth Grade Students of SMP LPP YW UMI Makassar

Abstract

Reading is one of the skills in English more important to learn because learning to read is better than helping students to learn English.  This study focused on the use of questioning techniques to improve students’ reading comprehension among the ninth-grade students of SMP LPP YW UMI Makassar. This study aims to find out whether the questioning technique can improve students’ reading comprehension and also to find out the effectiveness of the questioning technique, especially for the ninth-grade students of SMP LPP YW UMI Makassar. This study used a classroom action research design consisting of 20 students as the source of data. The data was taken through observation sheets, interviews, and diary notes. The technique of data analysis applied used the descriptive technique. In addition, the data were also taken from the test. The results of the analysis showed that the mean of the pre-test was 37, the mean of the cycle I was 38, and the mean of cycle II was 74.5. The percentage of the students who obtained points up to 70 also grew up. In the pre-test, the students who obtained point up to 70 were only 1 of 20 students (5%). In the post-test, I of the cycle I, the students who obtained points up 70 was 3 of 20 students (15%) and in post-test II, the students who obtained point up 70 were 16 of 20 students (80%). Based on the researcher’s findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the questioning technique was effective and improved. It is related to the result of observation showed that the students were more interested and motivated in joining the class and they were enthusiastic day by day during the teaching-learning process. Moreover, they felt happy and had fun, and also they gave good responses. The students were active and seemed to enjoy the teaching process.
