Inscriptions at the La Maddusila and the We Tenri Olle Tomb Complex in Barru Regency

Abstract

This research aims to explain the types, content, and meanings of inscriptions found in the La Maddusila Tomb Complex and the We Tenri Olle Tomb Complex in Barru Regency. It also provides an overview of the cultural development of Tanete from the 16th to the 20th century. Both tomb complexes are the subjects of this research to contribute to knowledge about inscriptions. This study uses a qualitative method, which involves description and applies basic archaeological methods such as literature data collection, surveys, on-site observations including descriptions, documentation, and interviews. Subsequently, data processing includes transliteration, transcription, and inscription analysis. The research findings conclude that there are three types of calligraphy used, namely Naskh, Kufi, Tsuluts scripts, and Lontara script. Overall, the meanings found in the Tomb Complexes include information such as the names of the buried figures, the time of their passing, their titles, and some inscriptions also include prayers, Quranic verses, dhikr, Sufism, the tombdeclaration of faith, and the declaration of monotheism.
