Using Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to Improve Secondary Student’s Listening Skill
Abstract
Listening is one of the main skills in English the ability to communicate to absorb information from the media or people. in communication 40% is focused on listening, 35% on speaking, 16% on reading, and 9% on writing. (Zulvia Trinova, 2019) Film as learning media can stimulate motivation and make it easier for students to understand in the learning process. Harry Potter is a film By J.K Rowling. Harry Potter film tells of a teenager named Harry Potter who attends a wizarding school called Hogwarts, The objective of the research is to find out the influence and responses of using Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone as media to improve student’s listening skill on secondary students. The sample of this research was from students of SMA Al-Bayan Makassar, class IX were consisted of 12 students. This research used quantitative method with pre-experimental. Researcher used listening test and questionnaire as data collected technique. SPSS used to find out T-Test. According to (Rost, 1994) students are frequently listening monologue, dialogue and speech in the listening class. According to expert Researcher decided to make scene selection procedure in the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone scenes, which were the scene contained monologue, the scene contained dialogue and scene contained speech. The result of this research showed there was an improvement in students’ listening skill. The mean score of students’ listening test was increased from 51,82 to 75,64 and there was 0,002 numeral significance. Students’ responses using Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’ Stone scenes very well, enjoyed and got motivated. This research used film as media to improve students’ listening skills. In the research process, the researchers applied several treatments. In the treatment process, the researcher repeats the scenes repeatedly with the aim that students can listen clearly what the speaker said. Based on (Apriliany, L., & Hermiati, 2021) that films can be used as media in the classroom, the use of films as learning media can build emotions and have a positive impact on students. The limitation of this research are terms of the student population which can not be used as a general reference and the time in the research also limited. However, this research obtained a significant
improvement. The researcher hopes that future can conduct more specific for this research and this research able to used as media in learning. Based on data analysis, the pre-test score before treatment was 51,82 and the post-test score after treatment was 75,64. That means there is an increase in class XI students of SMA Al-Bayan Makassar by using Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone Scenes as a learning media to improve listening skill.
