Learning English through Qur’an; Improving Students’ Vocabulary Analysis by Color Coding the Surah Ash-Shams’ Translation
Abstract
Authentic material is material taken directly from sources found in daily life that are not made for pedagogical purposes. Sumarsono (2018) has previously implemented the concept of authentic content for ELT. Since the Noble Qur'an has been translated carefully, he recommends a strategy for teaching and studying reading that uses the English translation of the Holy Qur'an as a trustworthy source of real learning materials. Methods and materials that are suitable for student circumstances are required to fulfill learning objectives, especially in ELT. Thus, students will put what they have learned into practice so that the learning process can be carried out well. This study was conducted to determine the effect of the color-coded text of surah Ash-Shams in improving students’ vocabulary analysis. The study was conducted by applying a descriptive quantitative method with a Pre-experimental design. In collecting the data, the researcher used written tests and questionnaires as research instruments. Written test which was pre-test and posttest aims at finding out students’ improvement in analyzing the vocabulary. While questionnaire was used to aim students’ responses about the color-coding method. The results of this study showed a significant increase in students’ vocabulary analysis after being treated with color coding translation of surah ash-shams, this is evidenced from the significance value of 0,017 is less than 0,05 where the mean score of the pre-test was 36.4 while the post-test was 52. It was also found that all students agreed that the use of the color coding method made it easier for them to sort and distinguish word classes. On the other hand, the use of the surah Ash-Shams’s translation is beneficial on the religious side where students can get closer and more familiar with the Qur’an. So this method is very suitable to be applied in ELT classes at Islamic-based educational institutions such as MTs, MTsN, Islamic Boarding Schools, and so on. Sumarsono (2019), the use of the English translation of the Holy Qur’an has two crucial roles, in the development of knowledge (students’ vocabulary analysis) which has been described previously, and also in the development of faith by reading the translation of the Holy Qur’an frequently which is a good deed. In vocabulary analysis, 8 parts of speech need to be analyzed that is verb, noun, adjective, pronoun, conjunction, adverb, interjection, and preposition. For the research to be effective in a short time, this research is limited to 4 parts of speech that is verb, noun, adjective, and pronoun. For future research, it is recommended to increase the intensity of meetings and use a higher-level population such as university students. Students’ vocabulary analysis improved by color coding the surah Ash-Shams’ translation. This can be proven from significance value of 0,017 is less than 0,05. In addition, it was found that most of the students gave positive responses to the use of the color coding method in analyzing vocabulary. The students agreed that it ease them in distinguishing the word classes. Students can more easily learn to read and highlight teaching materials with color coding.
