The Profile of Good EFL Teachers Based on Students’ Perception at SMA Gowa and MTsN Gowa

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating students’ perceptions about the profile of good English teacher at Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) 10 Gowa and Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri (MTsN) Gowa, and exploring a significant difference between students’ perceptions on good English teacher based on gender and age. The research applied descriptive qualitative method. The subjects were the students of SMA 10 Gowa
and MTsN Gowa. This research applied purposive sampling technique. The participants of this research were class X Bahasa, XI IIS 1 and XI MIA 3 of Senior High School 10 Gowa and class VII.5 and VIII.2 of MTsN Gowa in the academic year 2021/2022. The data was collected through questionnaire and interview. In analysing the data, the researcher used qualitative data analysis. The research results indicated that the first aim show that the students’ perceptions about the profile of good EFL teachers covered the following characteristics classified into four competencies, pedagogical, personal, social, and professional competences. The first characteristic is the pedagogical competence. This competence includes understanding students well, teaching strategies related to the students need, preparing the suitable syllabus for students, learning by experience and instructional media, using information and communicating technology, actualizing the students’ skill, having a social media as media of communication, and assessing and evaluating students. The second characteristic is the characteristic of personal competence. The students’ perceptions about this characteristic are friendly, kind, patient, discipline. The third one is the characteristic of social competence which include the students’ respect and politeness. The last characteristic is the professional competence which includes mastering the materials of subject taught, creative learning materials, and academic qualification related to teachers’ teaching. In addition, the researcher found that the teachers who have a good appearance are more favored by the students caused by the teachers’ ability to motivate the students to attend the class. The second aim showed that the differences among the students’ perceptions about the gender, male or female teachers with their age. The female students are more interested to be taught by male teachers than female teachers because most of the female teachers are more irritable while the male ones are more entertaining. On the other hand, the male students prefer to be taught by the female teachers because they have more and more polite attention. Most of the students prefer to be taught by a young teacher rather than an old teacher because the older teachers are easy to be offended, sensitive, and less enthusiastic.
