THE INHIBITORY EFFECT OF AMBON BANANA PEEL EXTRACT (MUSA PARADISIACA VAR. SAPIENTUM (L) KUNT.) ON THE GROWTH OF PREVOTELLA INTERMEDIA

Abstract

The problem of dental and oral disease in Indonesia currently needs attention and efforts to overcome dental health problems because almost everyone experiences problems with their dental and oral health, including cavities and bad breath, known as halitosis, caused by Prevotella intermedia bacteria. Banana plants contain active secondary metabolites which function as antimicrobial compounds. One part of the banana that contains antimicrobial compounds is found in the banana peel, which contains phytochemical components, namely tannins and quinones, which have antibacterial activity. METHOD : This research used a true experimental method with testing carried out in the laboratory with a post-test-only control group design. The statistical tests used were the Kruskal-Wallis and post hoc comparison tests. RESULTS & DISCUSSION: The Kruskal Wallis test results obtained a P-value of 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05. This shows that in the positive control group treatment, concentrations of 2%, 4%, and 8% were given, and there was a significant difference in the inhibitory effect of Prevotella intermedia .CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that Ambon banana peel extract (Musa paradisiaca var. sapientum (L) Kunt.) with a concentration of 8% was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of Prevotella intermedia compared to concentrations of 2% 4%.
